"Godly Submission"

May 5, 2024    Pastor Logan Ames

"Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right" ~ 1 Peter 2:13-14

If we're honest, these are difficult verses to take. The idea that God's people would have to submit to pagan authorities, especially corrupt ones, seems inconsistent with following Jesus alone as Lord. And yet, Peter tells us plainly that we do this for the Lord's sake, not our own. And let us remember that Peter and the other apostles lived under Nero, one of the worst emperors of all time, and that their Lord and ours suffered under Pontius Pilate, one of the worst governors of all time. Yet, the command to submit to and honor these human authorities remains, and that's because it's not about them, but the Lord who establishes them. This week at Friendship, we will look at Paul's words which mirror Peter's, and we will discuss what "Godly Submission" looks like for every believer. We must remember that God's mercy toward us changes everything about our lives and every area of our conduct. Join us for this important reminder during an election season focused on all the problems with our governing authorities.
