"Deliver Us from the Evil One"

Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still" ~ Exodus 14:13-14

This urging from Moses comes right before one of the most well-known instances of deliverance in the history of the world. God did, in the next few verses, require Moses to raise his staff and tell the Israelites to move forward as the Red Sea was parted, but that was their only active part. The deliverance was brought by God. What did it mean to "stand firm"? Sometimes, that means we stand still and do nothing. Other times, it means we act. We can only conclude, then, that standing firm has little to do with physical posture and much to do with spiritual posture. The Israelites would see the deliverance as long as they did not abandon faith in the Lord and succumb to fear. They would see the deliverance if they rejected compromise with the enemy. And they would see the deliverance if they didn't take Satan's bait to try to deliver themselves. This week at Friendship, we'll talk about the phrase "Deliver Us from the Evil One" from the Lord's Prayer, why we must depend on the Lord for it, and what He requires of us as we depend on Him. We face real fears just as the Israelites did, but our God is still the same mighty God. Join us for this message and learn about how we can stand firm today!
