"Serving the Widows"

"If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth" ~ 1 John 3:17-18

There may be no more obvious indicator of one's love for God or lack thereof than the degree to which he is willing to render aid when he sees someone in need and has the ability to help. This is true in the closest relationships we have and moving to the more distant ones. For example, the Bible says if we are not willing to help provide for our family members when they are in need, we have denied the faith and are worse than unbelievers. Secondly, if the church body does not help those in need, they are not showing the love of Christ. And thirdly, God commands us to even have love for our strangers, so that even when the one in need is not close to us, we still have a moral and spiritual obligation to help where we can. This week at Friendship, we will discuss what it looks like to love a specific group of people who are often in need, and were even more so in Biblical times. The message is on "Serving the Widows", and we hope you'll come and hear about how the Lord wants you to obey this command.
