"Jusitce for the Oppressed"

Jun 22, 2025    Pastor Logan Ames

"But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!" ~ Amos 5:24

The above quote from the Book of Amos was referenced by a Spirit-led preacher in one of the greatest speeches of all time - "I Have a Dream" by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Why? Because he stood in the face of great opposition and oppression, because he faced the hatred and discrimination that had supposedly been dealt with 100 years earlier when President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, and because no signing of any proclamation or law could alter the wickedness of the human heart. Dr. King's dream was noble and well-intentioned, but even he knew it could only be achieved through the Holy Spirit softening hearts, and hearts being receptive to the ways of the Lord. Justice is not only punishment for wrongdoers, but also a helping hand to restore those who are in need or oppressed. This week at Friendship, we'll discuss "Justice for the Oppressed" as something we must seek and work for as followers of Jesus. We'll talk about two different kinds of justice, and why we should be motivated to do it as the redeemed children of God.
