Sacrificial Love

Nov 10, 2019    Pastor Logan Ames

One of the greatest men I have ever studied was Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who is famous for leading his regiment to stand their ground at Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg in the Civil War. He was a brigadier general for the Union army, but before that he was a college professor in Maine. What would possess a man with a great job like that to give it up to enter a hellacious civil conflict? The answer can be best found in his letter to the governor of Maine, where he wrote, "I fear, this war, so costly of blood and treasure, will not cease until men of the North are willing to leave good positions, and sacrifice the dearest personal interests, to rescue our country from desolation, and defend the national existence against treachery". Chamberlain loved the Lord, and he loved a country without slavery. But he didn't just love it and want it; he was willing to sacrifice whatever was necessary, to get personally involved. This week at Friendship, we'll talk about the sacrificial love that Jesus has shown all of us and how it should motivate us to love him and love others sacrificially. How can we love others through personal involvement and sacrifice? Find out this weekend!
